Very clear introduction

This book will not solve all of your problems as you most likely will need advanced mathematical and statistical books relative to your specific area but it's the best foundational math book I've ever read. You can very quickly find useful topics that you may have forgotten and it's a great intro to the more advanced topics. The statistics chapter was so clear and helpful for an overall perspective and then you can find more advanced applications in dedicated textbooks. A very practical primer for any scientist; I love this book. I also wish it were available on Kindle with "audio enabled."

A Missed Opportunity to Broker Peace

When interpretations of scientific evidence differ radically and acrimoniously, you can be certain that the interest of at least one of the parties is not a better understanding of what makes things tick in the natural world. Whether the topic is the heliocentric solar system, descent with modification, or rapid climate change, rarely are the scientific facts themselves a matter of contention. Edmond Mathez' book is a case in point.

The true value in Mathez' book is his treatment of the carbon cycle and the complexity of the interrelationships between the atmosphere, the lithosphere, the biosphere, the hydrosphere, and the cryosphere. Mathez' packaging of these topics for the scientifically literate reader, complete with illustrations, is masterful. Once Mathez equips us with the necessary vocabulary and the conceptual framework, he takes us back into deep geologic time to experience "climates past." Here we learn how carbon cycle disequilibria have created millennia of glacial and interglacial cycles, and we learn where we are in the present interglacial. And he shows the complexities and limitations of the climate models designed to forecast our destiny.

Mathez describes the three types of irregularities in the Earth's orbit which interact to create Milankovitch cycles, which explain much of the naturally-occurring cyclicality in Earth's' historic climate. He also describes the naturally-occurring accelerators, principally the polar albedo effect and water vapor, as well as the climate system's balancing factors.

One of the most startling of the historic cycles is the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), some 55 million years ago, which the author states "is analogous to resent-day climate change." During the Paleocene, climate had been slowly warming, but then a sudden, enormous mass of carbon flooded the ocean and atmosphere. During the PETM, 1,500 to 4,500 gigatons (billion metric tons) of carbon entered the Earth's climate system. This influx of carbon increased the Earth's temperature by 9 to 16 degrees Fahrenheit, about the amount of carbon and temperature we'd expect at current levels of anthropogenic carbon production. Another startling precedent was the Younger Dryas, only about 12,900 years ago, which in the space of only 1,300 years increased the Earth's temperature some 13 degrees Fahrenheit. The Younger Dryas warming period does not appear, however, to have been caused by an increase in carbon, but to a sudden decrease in the salinity of the oceans.

The author shows that in the last 100 thousand years there have been 23 naturally-occurring warm periods, the last of them causing the current increases in atmospheric and hydrospheric temperatures which account for the retreating glaciers. It is clear that with humans introducing some 36 gigatons of carbon dioxide annually, the current rate of naturally-occurring warming can only accelerate.

Edmond Mathez, provides all of this information, and more, yet he fails to draw the key conclusion which could have easily brokered a peace between partisans in the climate debate. Why doesn't he state unequivocally that there are both natural and anthropogenic causes to the current interglacial warming period and that climate research should focus on quantifying the percentages of each? Of course it makes sense for humans to reduce carbon emissions, but won't the impact of any reductions depend on the relative impact of our emissions? That is a question that Mathez curiously leaves unanswered.

Same Collection as the recorded album with the same title. EZ-Play format isn't for everybody.

This music book parallels the "ABBA Gold" album (released some years ago) that incorporates their best hits. The EZ Play format uses a notation style that is easy to read (especially for those who have a need for reading glasses) and is good for beginners who don't know how to read regular music notation (e.g. The key letters are printed within the bulb of the notes). The EZ play format offers simplified arrangements and generally leaves off the intro that most popular music has. So, if this format is acceptable to you, subject to its limitations (as sheet music) then you, too, will be pleased with this collection. If you are unfamiliar with the "EZ Play" notation style and the "beginner" arrangements associated with it, you should familiarize yourself and check out (what little you can see online) to determine if you would be happy with this music. It IS best suited to beginners, but more advanced musicians can treat it as a "lead sheet" and add in the flourishes, etc. appropriate to the composition. As a side note, I have "easy" versions of this publishers "fake books" where all songs are converted to the key of C, regardless of the appropriateness. The EZ Play songs at first, appear to also be converted to the key of C ... but in reality, may be in C, G, or F (in most cases) with all the flats/sharps notated at the occurrence rather than as the "key" for the song. Oddly, the EZ play treatment generally works better than the 'all tunes in C" treatment of the Fake Books...

Must Read for Computer Scientists Involved in Bioinformatics

In the first chapter, Hunter offers the Computer Scientist (or anyone with training in the physical sciences) with a critical observation about Biology that is essential to understanding your work in the emerging field of Bioinformatics - Biology offers no unifying patterns or laws. In this regard, the author relates how a Nobel Prize winning Physicist referred to biologists (somewhat derisively, but not wholly inaccurately) as "stamp collectors". For a person such as myself with over 20 years in the physical sciences, this was an important revelation, in that applying computational techniques to biological data cannot be "cook-booked" as is common practice in other disciplines. Indeed, these are unique problems that (a least for the time being) require customized solutions.

Hunter provides an enlightening exploration of biological principles, major fields of study, and most importantly, terminology that computer scientists will well appreciate. Throughout the book, the author offers useful parallels between "computer think" and "biology think" that I have found invaluable in the way I tackle computational problems for the biologists with whom I work.

Pretty cool book for the price (Kindle Edition)

I ended up choosing this particular book as a starting point to understand more about molecular biology, and I wasn't too disappointed. Most molecular biology textbooks are rampant with assumed knowledge that makes it difficult for people with backgrounds in computer science, math, physics, etc. This book does do a great job of presenting a decent introduction to current knowledge, trends, technologies, and even politics of molecular biology.

Pros:
-Decent historical overviews of beliefs of evolution of processes throughout the discussion.
-Does a great job of giving you the gist of biological processes. This is important since there are differences among all life in terms of structure and processes, even for the same function.
-Highlights the need to recognize the point of a function and not memorization of the components involved. Does go over glycolysis, z-scheme, and cellular respiration in detail, but again, it does this without trying to force memorization.
-Explains current research areas and exciting developments, along with reasons why this is important.
-Has a great section on bioethics that doesn't chose any particular side, but highlights current legislation trends and issues, discusses morality differences, and highlights the value and lack of value of certain biological technologies.
-Lists industry standards of topics at the end of the chapter to read for further reading.

Cons:
-Did not really explain details of antibodies or antigens in terms of their structure. Kind of disappointed, but this seems to be a fuzzy topic anyways based on the wiki page for antigens.
-Was pretty disappointed with the discussion on sequencing and microarrays, mostly because the definition of antibodies and antigens wasn't as verbose, leading with questions as to how these technologies work.

The book is pretty approachable to most people. There isn't any real math, and would make a decent layman's reader for someone just interested in the subject. Overall I was pretty pleased since this is a nice foundation to learn terminology for more focused books.

Naming the Enemy is the first systematic documentation of this international resistance to transnational corporations and globalization which has so recently burst into the public gaze with the street protests in Seattle, Washington, London and Prague.

A wide and heterogeneous range of social movements now oppose the very fundamentals of market capitalism. Their challenge is beginning, Amory Starr shows, to amount to a sweeping critique of its purposes and practice. She explains how these movements understand their enemies and what sort of future they envision. There are, she suggests, three basic types:

Movements trying to constrain corporate power through democratic institutions and direct action;

Movements attempting a completely different kind of 'globalization from below' in which corporations will be reshaped in the service of new international democratic structures that will be populist, participatory and just;

Movements seeking to delink their localities and communities from the global economy and rebuild instead small-scale socieites in which large corporations have no role at all.

This new phenomenon has received scant media or scholarly attention. But it is likely to become much more important politically as the globalized economy dominated by giant corporations and institutions like the World Bank and IMF fails to deliver on jobs, social justice, Third World development and the environment. The course of this new kind of political struggle will have huge implications for human welfare and civil liberties.

A primer on the the WORLD WIDE anti-corporate movement

Amory Starr's highly readable "Naming the Enemy" explains the global movement against corporations. Using impeccably researched case studies, she shows how local movements against local problems turned into a global movement for social justice. However, this is no hagiography: Starr gives the movement an analysis every bit as critical as that of the system it struggles against. A well balanced, crucial book.

If you read Amory Starr's book, you know that the protests in Seattle weren't the first against corporate globalization. "Naming the Enemy" explains how this movement has grown from local campaigns against local problems to a planet-wide movement against a companies that turn people and the environment into commodities. Impeccably researched but written without using academic jargon, readable without being condescending, "Naming the Enemy" is one of the most important political science books in recent memory.

Amory Starr has a way with words seldom matched by academic writers. She is able to take complicated issues and with her skillful articulation, explain them in a very user friendly manner. This book is radical in content, but it is extremely well written. Her prose rolls off the tongue like poetry, and the concepts make complete sense.

This book is very short intoduction for a wide range of mysteries. As any book on this subject, this one also contains many things some people will find hard to belive, but nobody forces anyone to actually belive it. Joshua as well as other quality writers allways gives the source of information and advise you to do your own little resarch if you feel that something is out of place.

Book it self is written in serious but positive way and I would recommend it to all you seekers out there, whether you looking for truth, hope, peace or unity. Bits of all that you can find in here.

Also, I would recommend other books of Joshua David Stone (Ph.D) who has written very wide range of books on spirituality. He is not so known on commercial level, i guess he is yet to be discovered cause surely he is one of the best.

I was really impressing at the length and precision that went in to this book. I have always felt that there was more to be told then was originally stated. Stone, I feel gives an insight to the world we thought we knew. A look at how the people we hold in such high reguard are the ones who are conspiring against us.
