Priceless

If i am not mistaken this is the very book that Einstein read and from which he developed his idead of special relativity. It was the critique of Mach of the ideas of Newton which exposed the flaus in Newton's thinking. Einstein built on Mach's ideas and brought his own questions to the subject which brough great results, not only in classical physics but made possible the developement of modern physics.
Descartes said: "Today, then, as i have suitably freed my mind from all cares, and have secured for myself an assured leisure in peaceful solitude, i shall at last apply myself earnestly and freely to the general overthrow of all my former opinions."
It is in this spirit that new physics, and sciences in general, are created. A million experiments will not bring about any progress. Pure rationalism is the true creator, which is at the very nature of a theoretical physicist. This book exposes the thinking of such a person.

Intellectual giant

One of the most influential books that led Einstein to become skeptical of concepts like absolute space and time. Einstein enjoyed Mach's no-nonsense attitude. I found it a bit difficult to read but enjoyed it very much.

An excellent ethnography!

Erickson's book is an engaging and vividly written ethnographic study of a small, family-owned restaurant called The Hungry Cowboy. It brings together studies of the decline of community in the United States with literature on gender and work in the "new economy," that is the shift from manufacturing to service work in our economy in the last 25 years. As Americans' sense of community declines and the numbers of face-to-face interactive service jobs increase, Erickson asks how people manage to create a sense of familiarity and intimacy in an increasingly isolated social world. Where do they go to forge community with others? While other scholars have focused on religious institutions to address such questions, Erickson considers a seemingly unlikely site - the local family restaurant and bar. More Americans than ever before now take their meals at restaurants several nights a week, and, as Erickson finds, customers expect to buy not only a simple, efficiently prepared meal, but the "personal" care and concern of the server. As many of the people she interviewed reported, they come back time and time again - even if they don't like the food - because they enjoy the "friendliness" and "cozy familiarity" of the restaurant's atmosphere. In short, American consumers expect to buy "service," and even "friendship," at this local family restaurant.

Erickson's book raises a number of timely and important empirical and theoretical questions about the loss of community, the rise of service work and its consequences, the new meaning of consumption in our service society, as well as the costs to the self of jobs which require what sociologist Arlie Hochschild has termed "emotional labor." For instance, how do people create a sense of community and familiarity in a restaurant? What makes one restaurant feel warm and welcoming to customers? How do workers, the majority of whom are women, who are "paid to care," feel about the customers they serve? And finally, how does Americans' participation in the service economy either as customers or as workers transform their sense of an "authentic" self in relations with others? Erickson's research breaks new ground in studies of work by looking beyond the older model of management and employee, and considering instead the complicated dance of power in the triadic relationship between customer, worker, and manager. In her argument, it is the complex interactions among these three groups that produce ambience and sociability in the Hungry Cowboy.

This book is a must-read for books in the sociology of work, but also of general interest to anyone who has ever spent time in their own local family restaurant.

Erickson provides sound analysis and vivid illustrations of the roles and interactions within a typical community restaurant. She does an outstanding job of humanizing the important relationships between managers, workers and customers and applying important sociological insights on the complex 'home versus work' divide and strategies of investment and detachment among workers. About the Author
Edward A. Keller is a professor, researcher, writer, and most importantly, mentor and teacher to undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, Dr. Keller's students are working on earthquake hazards, how waves of sediment move through a river system following disturbance, and geologic controld on habitat to endangered southern steelhead trout. He was born and raised in California (Bachelor’s degree in Geology and Mathematics from California State University at Fresno, Master’s degree in Geology from University of California at Davis), it was while pursuing his Ph.D. in Geology from Purdue University in 1973 that Ed wrote the first edition of Environmental Geology, the text that became the foundation of the environmental geology curriculum. Ed joined the faculty of the University of California Santa Barbara in 1976 and has been there since, serving multiple times as the chair of both the Environmental Studies and Hydrologic Science programs. In that time he has been the author on over 100 articles, including seminal works on fluvial processes and tectonic geomorphology. Ed’s academic honors include the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist Award, Geological Society of America (2004), Quatercentenary Fellowship from Cambridge University, England (2000), two Outstanding Alumnus Awards from Purdue University (1994, 1996), A Distinguished Alumnus Award from California State University at Fresno (1998), the Outstanding Outreach Award from Southern California Earthquake Center (1999).

A coherent text that doesn't quite live up to expectations

Keller's text is a thorough exploration of both facets of environmental geology: natural hazards and the human impact on the environment. The text includes numerous case studies to illustrate the concepts, though most of them are set in the United States (especially the West Coast). Keller presents, in chapter one, four principles that are supposedly woven throughout the text. At the end of each chapter, he includes "Critical Thinking Questions", which I hoped would lead to vibrant in-class discussions. The other aspect of this book that led me to select it for undergraduate class was the CD-ROM, which promised to provide students with simulations of real-world environmental problem solving.
Alas, the book does not live up to its promises. My greatest disappointment is that the text is rather dry, and the Critical Thinking Questions rarely moved beyond synthesizing material from the chapter. I am also concerned that students explore environmental issues at both the local (for me, northeastern US) and global scales. Apart from a fairly thorough coverage of global warming and an occasional photo of an earthquake or volcano overseas, Keller seems content to focus on the US, especially his own home state, California. His only nod to Earth Systems Science is a few paragraphs crammed into the first chapter, along with mention of Gaia. The CD-ROM was less exciting for students than I had anticipated, and my class found the written part of the CD assignments difficult, and many answers were based upon previous ones, so if they got one wrong, they would get several wrong and do poorly as a result. Finally, I was disappointed by Keller'ss uninspired philosophical assertion in the final chapter, in which he insisted that "sustainable development" is possible and ought to be pursued. In a class discussion, the students all concluded that development and sustainability are mutually exclusive things.
The text is thorough and fairly accessable, but fails to move beyond being "like most other textbooks" despite the numerous ways it appears to do so at first glance.

Great textbook!

For my Intro to Geology course, we were instructed to buy this book. I'm very glad that I did! It's very informative, easy to read, and there are plenty of examples / pictures to clarify what's being talked about. It really helps a lot when you're studying for a test!

Review of Environmental Geology, 4th edition

This reference is fine for the general reader who wishes to understand the basics of Environmental Geology, however, the information it contains can be found for a much less expensive cost at any online site or library. Much of the information covered is also a general topic of most high school geology courses, though it contains a good amount of information concerning human impact on natural processes. The writing style is concise, though not so dense as to defer all but the most determined reader.
