Stigler, one of the leading figures in the conservative "Chicago School" of economics, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1982 for his work on the economics of information and on the economics of public regulation. In this engaging memoir, he recounts his intellectual development. As a graduate student at the University of Chicago during the 1930s, he was deeply influenced by economists Frank Night and Jacob Viner. These two mentors nurtured his belief in the efficacy of free markets and the harm that government interference in markets often causes. Stigler, who taught at Iowa State University and Columbia University before returning to the University of Chicago in 1958, here describes the work of colleagues like Milton Friedman, Gary Becker, Ronald Coase and Richard Posner, "Chicago" economists who share a fierce commitment to free markets and to rigorous microeconomic analyses. Stigler concludes that economic logic will eventually pervade other, less rigorous social sciences. This is a well-written and tautly argued book.

Academia with affection

This biography combines analysis of ideas along with analysis of people. Lots of intriguing comments on the famous, Friedman, Becker, Viner, Hayek, Knight, Burns, etc. Stigler presents a sympathic view, avoiding the negative without compromising accuracy. Also comments on many universities in the same way, with tact and affection. Much time spent defending academia and the intellectual world. Explains his interaction with government and policy as academic. Covers his reaction to Nobel award. Interesting viewpoint from insider who was still somewhat outside.

Frank Knight was Stigler's mentor. Explains Knight's personality and his impact on this students. Contrasts Knight and Simons. Quotes Knight : "Truth in society is like strychnine in the individual body, medicinal in special conditions and minute doses; otherwise and in general, a deadly poison." (23) As usual, Stigler makes no critical comment.

Notes that Henry Simons was the forerunner of the Chicago school and its devotion to markets. Presents a quote from Simon; "It seems no wise fantastic, indeed, to suggest that present development point toward a historic era which will bear close resemblance at many points to the middle ages. With the disappearance of free trade within national areas will come endless, destructive conflict among organized economic groups - which would suffice, without assitance from international wars, for the destruction of Western civilization and its institutional heritage." (21) This written in 1930's.

Remembers Jacob Viner this way: "It was years later before I fully appreciated some of Viner's great virtues. He was incomparably less dogmatic than Knight (or Henry Simons), and considering the inadequacy of the knowledge then (and now) of the sources and effect of public policies, that was the only responsible attitude. . . Viner, on the contrary, analyzed Ricardo perceptively and sympathetically, so a reader could 'hear' Ricardo." This is a good description of Stigler's method.

Devotes a chapter to Ronald Coase. He was present at the famous meeting where Coase persuaded 20 economists to change their mind to his view. This explanation of the "Coase Theorem" is clear and fun. Stigler inserts theory into this book with only a little strain.

This book will appeal to ones with an interest in economics or academia. In contrast to Sowell, does not focus on conflict. Stigler worked within the system. However, he is not blind to problems, just understanding.

EASY TO READ, INTERESTING HISTORY OF RECENT ECONOMIC THOUGHT

Stigler won the Nobel Prize in 1982 for his work on antitrust and the role of information in the economy. He was one of the founders of the renowned Chicago School of economic thought, whose most famous member was Milton Friedman. Stigler traces the origins of the Chicago School in this easy to read, non academic memoir. He also tells a bit of personal history, but his main focus is on the analysis of thought evolution in economics.
Overall, I thought this was a nice concise book. With only about 200 pages, the author surely measured his words. This is not a book about economics (though there is a little bit in it), but mainly a book on economic thought.

A Witty Tour of The Chicago School

The dust jacket describes this book as "...at once the masterful intellectual autobiography of one of this century's most distinguished economists and a brilliant overview of the impact of economic ideas on policy since the mid-century." That description is right on target.
Stigler provides everything in this short, accessible book. The reader is treated to a detailed explanation of the evolution of Stigler's thinking on a wide variety of topics. These chapters, such as Chapter 6 ("Monopoly") and Chapter 7 ("Political Regulation of Economic Life") also provide a very good intellectual history of how the generally accepted view of these topics has changed over time. Not coincidentally, these chapters together with Chapter 10 ("The Chicago School") document the tremendous amount of influence the Chicago School of economics has had over the economics profession.
At a minimum, the book is worth the purchase price because of it's witty treatment of the "inside baseball" of academic life and frank description of the intellectual atmosphere at the University of Chicago. As an example, the letter exchange between Frank Knight and Paul Douglas reprinted beginning on page 183 should not be missed (no synopsis here can do it justice). Nor should the reader miss the description detailed in Chapter 5 ("Eureka") of how Ronald Coase, in one evening, turned the entire Chicago economics department from critics to supporters of what is now called the "Coase Theorem."

The earlier promises in Isaiah 40-55 form the background of this critique. Much of the post-exilic prophetic literature sought to explain the non-fulfilment of these promises. The author shows that the shared focus of most of these explanations is a culpable priesthood. She further demonstrates a different picture of the post-exilic priesthood from the one often previously assumed. Rather than attributing cultic monolatry to the post-exilic priests, reformed through their suffering following the destruction of Jerusalem, she shows that the emerging new clergy were not so very different from their pre-exilic predecessors. In addition, in contrast to the common assumption that the prophetic literature displays contradictory views, the author stresses the similarity between the thoughts and ideas displayed throughout Isaiah 56-66, Haggai, Zechariah 1-8 and Malachi.

Well researched and clearly written…Bravo!!

Who would have thought anyone could return to this field that so many others have already harvested, and yet glean so many valuable grains of essential information. Mr. Ryan does just that with a spare narrative that is extremely well organized and clearly written. No romanticism or mythology here... "just the facts madam". I thoroughly enjoyed reading this terrific book about a critical part of latin american history. If you only read one book about "el che", this should be high on your list.

ThiS was a good story told as if you were reading a congressional report.The story carries alot of import and explains a very important change in America's strategy for dealing with insurgencies.But it tastes like cardboard.Even when Che is finally captured and killed there is no emotion.The facts researched for this book were very well done.Read it as a text book.

This is an attempt to memorialize and bring a recent hobby, close to my heart and stomach, to those of you who are either in my family, or close enough to be family. My intention is to make this a reference and guide for the staple recipes that our family most frequently ate and enjoyed. I contemplated many names for this book and finally came up with the not so original but very fitting title of “Cuban Cooking 101” It really is meant to be easy enough for anyone, regardless of cooking experience, looking to whip up a Cuban dish.

Cuban cooking is not an elitist or eclectic style of cooking; in fact, it is very simple food prepared with some very basic flavor enhancing ingredients. Although most of the Caribbean islands’ cultures and cuisines illustrate the influences left behind by Spanish and African occupancy, there are no strict African or Spanish dishes here. These recipes are very much Caribbean in flavor and often times distinctly Cuban.

The desire to put a book like this together began when my own kids started going off to college Admittedly, I grew tired of answering the phone and having one of them tell me to put Mom on the phone because they needed a recipe for some basic dish that they were looking to make that evening. Imagine a desperate call asking for directions on how to prepare “Caldo Gallego” via long distance!
I had come to realize that these kids along with others of their generation had grown up enjoying all the delicacies of our culture but had no idea how to prepare it themselves; I mean a simple “sofrito” (the base of all Cuban dishes) was a foreign concept to them!

Most of these recipes are from the family archives; and some are so basic that most Cuban cookbooks have a version of them. However, I have found that several of the books I reviewed tend to overwhelm the reader with either too many recipes or instructions that are far too complicated. My wife’s approach of a dash of this and a pinch of that, has not worked for me as a cook. So, In addition to providing simplified instruction for the “How To” portion of the recipe I have also tried to be as descriptive as possible with the ingredients and quantities.

The emphasis of the book is on ease and swift preparation. From what I remember a Cuban mother could whip something up in the kitchen that feeds everyone with minimal fuss, leaving them sucking their fingers dry.

This book is meant to be the go-to guide for everyday cooking readily available on your kitchen counter. So go ahead and wear these pages out, until the recipes become second nature. Remember, this may be the beginning of a culinary journey for you, so do not think of this as the bible of authentic Cuban gastronomic experiences; but, rather a fun and creative ongoing work in progress.

Roger Besu has created the definitive book on Cuban cooking. All the traditional dishes are included along with more exotic and regional favorites found in few other recipe books. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I also enjoyed the author's comments on each dish.

This book has a fantastic collection of dishes. I have tried a few of these recipes out for dinner parties with friends and they have been very impressed with the way it came out. One friend who is actually cuban said it tasted just like his Mother's!

Family, Love, and God's Plan

It's Christmas. The Sanders clan is gathering in Hope Springs. The festivities are dampened by the sudden death of Pastor Jim Dillon. He and Grandma Geri, matriarch of the clan, have lived next door to each other for many years so both families are caught up in the funeral preparations. The two families, one, the Dillons, white, the Sanders, black, are very supportive of each other in an atmosphere where whites and black tend to keep to themselves.

People from both families arrive with issues. Todd Dillon and is wife Becca, are mourning his father, but she is also caught up in the excitement of her expanding ministry. Stephanie Sanders arrives unwilling to spend Christmas getting to know this branch of her family. She doesn't want to serve, but perhaps the is God's plan for her. Janelle and her children arrive still mourning the death of her husband, David. These and many other characters from the family and the little town of Hope Springs make this a delightful book.

The message is strongly Christian. The characters all at some point seriously pray to God to guide them in finding the plan for their lives. I found the coupling of the strong Christian message with the modern characters, each with issues, very satisfying.

I highly recommend this book. The characters are appealing; the plot, full of romantic twists, and the emphasis on God's plan for our lives, instructive.

Great addition to the series

I've read the other books in the series and thus was familiar with many of the characters and reading this book "Hope Springs" reaffirmed my love for author Kim Cash Tate.

In this book, a relatively recently widowed Janelle goes 'home' to spend time with her grandmother who is seriously ill. Because life back home is filled with sadness and memories of her late husband, she decides to uproot her kids and spend some time taking care of her grandmother. She encounters her first love whose wife has left him as a single father and old feelings are soon at the surface...

Janelle's cousin Stephanie, who has a history of selfishness from the prior two novels, is feeling the prompting of God to also assist with their grandmother, her husband will be away on a medical mission for weeks and she asked to me made more of a servant, so how can she say no...

Finally, Becca is the wife of the grandmother's neighbor's son. When her father-in-law who was the pastor of the local church passes away suddenly, Becca's husband feels call to move from St. Louis to the small town of Hope Springs to pastor his late father's church. Becca is torn as her career as an inspirational speaker and author is just taking off and Hope Springs is not what she saw as a home base.

This novel tells the stories of these three women, who have separate and overlapping stories of their struggles to move forward in the paths that God has laid forth. The characters, as always for author Kim Cash Tate, are well developed, engaging and the stories are great from start to finish.

I savored each and every page and am again eagerly awaiting the next story from this gifted author.

Engaging Christian Fiction

Janelle Evans lost her husband and she also pulled away from her relationship with God. When she and her children visit Hope Springs for a family reunion, she finds a reason to stay longer than she'd intended. Will the time she spends with family and an old friend help her to live again?

Becca Anderson is finally living her dream. She has been invited to speak at The National Christian Women's Conference, and maybe even greater things will follow. Her husband has been called to Pastor his late father's church in Hope Springs, which means relocation to a small town. How will the move affect her dream, her marriage, and her walk with the Lord?

Stephanie London is happily married and living in St. Louis. A visit to Hope Springs reunites her with family she hasn't seen in years, and it also teaches her a few things about herself.

The first thing I thought as I began to read was that it would have been nice if this book had not been released until December or maybe even November, around Thanksgiving. Since it's Christmas when the story begins, reading it during the Christmas season would have made for a even cozier reading experience. Yes, I could have waited, but I had read Faithful, and I was reading Cherished when I bought Hope Springs, so - since I really enjoyed the first two books - I was eager to read more of Tate's work.

Predominately white churches, predominately black churches - Tate brings attention to the division among believers, teaching a lesson Christians will benefit from. There are also messages about how harmful family secrets can be, putting someone's needs before your own, learning how to hear from God, family unity and forgiveness.

Some of Tate's fictional characters from Faithful and Cherished are in this book, but the story mostly revolves around new characters. There are quite a few of them to keep track of - I had to go back a few sentences every now and then to make sure I had things straight, but Hope Springs was as inspirational, engaging and thought-provoking as Tate's previous novels.

Top Reference for both the novice and expert Case Manager

Catherine Mullahy's 5th edition encompasses all of the current events occurring in Case Management today from the explosion of ACO's, PCMH's, to the Affordable Care Act and how Case Managers will drive the quality of health care upwards in the next 10 to 20 years. Mullahy works side by side with the Commission of Case Manager Certification to ensure that there is an accurate accounting of data there to prepare for CCM certification (coupled with her 2-day review) for those relatively new to the field and, information supported by evidence-based research/guidelines to hold the attention of the experienced Case Manager. Her book is an eloquent blend of where we have been as Case Managers and the opportunities ahead. While this reviewer does not feel that the book is meant to be the sole review source for the CCMC certification exam, I highly recommend her book as your main reference for exam preparation. My experience in academic teaching draws me to Mullahy's book for its profound logic. I foresee that the next addition will incorporate more clinical integration as I believe there will be yet another paradigm shift that enables the Case Manager to utilize his/her clinical skills opening up a new platform of care for the Case Manager. I feel that the field of Case Management is about to REALLY evolve and we will say goodbye to mediocre salaries, being enslaved to quantity instead of quality, and quality avenues we never dreamed possible are just around the corner. In fact, I believe quality will be required to survive in all levels of health care, including health insurance. It is my hope that the "numbers" game or quantity of care inadequacy model along with fragmented health care services will be a hazard of the past forcing a small subset of managers and practitioners seeking personal autonomy to miss the bus full of inter-professional collaborators on a mission to salvage health care. It is this reviewer's opinion that the Affordable Care Act has already established measures to ensure the delivery of patient-centered, care-coordinated, holistic quality care with wellness and preventative-directed outpatient care and clinically competent, comprehensive inpatient care designed to contribute to threshold improvement in patient safety, satisfaction, and outcomes. Mullahy describes all types of health care models, insurance, and she reviews the nation's obesity epidemic and the challenges facing health care providers and their scientific colleagues. Her book invites you to examine ethical decision-making, standards of practice, the significance of research, and emerging trends relevant to quality and safety. Paralleled with the changes in Case Management today, this book is by far the most comprehensive book on the market today for the Case Manager. Not good for CCM Exam or CM practice

I purchased this book because I thought it would be a comprehensive resource on CM. This is not the case, and I would not recommend it for the following reasons:

1. The book has 749 pages of text, not counting the index. It would be an easier read if the sample documents/flowcharts - that amount to 100 pages in Chapter 3 alone - were removed or perhaps documented in the Appendix. The flowcharts are presented in very tiny font making them extremely difficult to read, and ultimately of no use. Their placement slowed the navigation of the chapter and distracted from the content.
2. The book is not cohesive. Chapters and sections seem to have been written separately and stitched together haphazardly, contributing to repetitive and inconsistent content. For example: p. 651: “Overdoses leading to drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States”, quoting the CDC, while on p. 657: “The [CDC] places drug overdoses in the United States as the second leading cause of unintended deaths, right behind motor vehicle deaths.” Same issue with information regarding renal disease, p.418: “Medicare automatically becomes the primary funding source for patients with end-stage renal disease, even those who are active employees, after 18 months of dialysis treatment, but only for services related to the renal condition” and p. 441: “In patient with end-stage renal disease, Medicare becomes primary 30 months following the diagnosis of this condition, even if the individual is under the age of 65”. It may be that both statements are true, but this is an example of the way in which information is scattered all over the book. You may read about something on one page, only to read about it again 100 pages later presented as if it's being introduced for the first time.
3. Motivational interviewing – an essential tool in CM – is given one paragraph and simply defined as “talking and listening.”
4. Behavioral Health is given 4 pages out of 749. This is not helpful to those who are LCPCs, LCSWs, etc, and practice behavioral health case management.
5. The author references her own case management business and business practices quite a bit, including a long segment on management of a CM practice. This is understandable, since this is what she does, but it’s not applicable to those who function as case managers in varying capacities.

If you’re looking for CCM study material, choose a book specifically geared at such. If you’re looking for a resource on CM encompassing various areas of CM, consider other options.

About the Author
SERENE ALLISON and PEARL BARRETT are sisters who share a passion for healthy eating. They both have large boisterous families and love to experiment in the kitchen on ways to best nourish their families and stay slim and healthy in the process. They are former Christian recording artists who traveled extensively for the record label, but they relinquished their touring careers to embrace a life at home with children, dinners, dishes, and diapers. Getting TRIM and HEALTHY with this amazing cookbook!

This is the most beautiful and useful cookbook I have ever owned (and I'm a bit of a collector). First of all, the recipes are SO delicious! I've made over a dozen of them now and none have disappointed. RUN to the kitchen and go make the Chicken Parmy like TONIGHT. It's unbelievable. Secondly, the recipes are SO healthy! I can't believe I can eat such wholesome foods and lose weight at the same time. I've been eating Trim Healthy Mama style (which means I'm eating goooood) for well over two years now, and I've improved my health, increased my energy... while *not* having to deny my sweet tooth or go hungry. No deprivation here - just scrumptious, FUN meals for me and my family!

Ingredients

I realize a lot of people don't like the unusual ingredients. But I wanted to share my take on it. I actually appreciate recipes that taste amazing that have incorporated healthy ingredients like cakes with Whole-Husk Psyllium flakes, sweets made with non GMO sugar alcohols and stevia, added non tasting whey for extra protein, collagen and Gelatin for incredible health benefits, sauces made with Glucomannan or "gluccie" for superb cholesterol levels and regularity, and so many more interesting nutritional ingredients. You are baking and cooking with supplements! You are feeding your family with the most amazing tasting food AND most amazing quality ingredients. I have never seen anything like it.
Some say, the sisters are just trying to sell more food products. Well good for them if they are. This is not a charity or not for profit organization. These families deserve the fruit of their labor. But I actually believe they desire to create the best possible products for both taste and health - not only for their own families, but for this new growing family of mamas. I believe they are genuine and sincere in their passion to see families change for the better. I do not believe they are driven by greed.
I am thrilled with this program and have lost 35 pounds on it. My husband and son love the food and none of us feel we are eating diet food, because well... We are not.
This is the best program I have ever been on and I would much rather see my money go to these precious families than to some random market.
Let's think outside the box. These ladies did and look what they have accomplished. Bravo.

Better tasting recipes & more professional looking but calls for lots of specialty items & calls whey protein dairy free

This is a lovely cookbook, I love the improvements on the recipes and the inclusion of recipes from bloggers and others who have adopted and made the plan even better than it was originally. However, there were a couple of things that are really frustrating. 1) Baking Blend (BB): I realize that the book contains a note in the beginning about BB and that they don't want to you have to buy their name brand products and you can make your own blend, but there are no directions or recipes for it. I know people will probably hate me for saying that, but it's a cookbook, for goodness sake. If you have a ton of recipes that call for special ingredients, maybe having a substitute recipe for that frequently used ingredient would be helpful. (Yes, I know there are recipes on Pinterest, etc., but what a hassle.) I kept seeing these beautiful pictures and thinking, wow, I'd love to try that! Only to find I had no collagen, no oat fiber, no agar, no baking blend, etc. It was incredibly frustrating. I'd already saved up and purchased special ingredients like (super) Sweet Blend, nutritional yeast, xylitol, raw apple cider vinegar and all that after reading the old book, now I have to stock up again on new special ingredients, especially since I need to do this dairy-free. Oh, and I found a canister of beef gelatin locally but it cost $25! This is not helping convince my husband that I can do this on the cheap.lol.

2) Dairy-free: I found something very strange in the cookbook- recipes that were labelled dairy-free, yet called for whey protein? Umm... whey protein is not dairy free. I thought maybe it was a typo for a second, but then found another recipe with the same problem.

Okay, now I have not had the book for long and have only made two recipes from it- the Cry No More Brownies and the Salted Caramel Gluccie Pudding. Yum!! The brownies were lovely and fudgy and I love the secret ingredient in them but they did take a while to make because it called for special ingredient sweeteners and I didn't have them so I had to track down a conversion chart and figure it out first. I do love the more professional look of the book and am very glad to see Serene and Pearl have become so popular. I have followed their mom's ministry for many years and it's so neat to see these ladies who come from a great family now in the spotlight. :)
