Gives only the "greatest hits" of Nepal trekking

This book includes the biggest and most well-known treks around Nepal, and the descriptions of those treks are very detailed and comprehensive. The maps provided are accurate and helpful. If you are looking for alternatives or treks off the beaten tourist tracks, few of the featured routes fit that bill. In addition, there are very few short (less than 4 days) treks, and almost no routes within close proximity to Kathmandu. This book is good if you are coming to Nepal for less than a month and only want to hit one or two of the major treks. If you are planning to come for longer, or live here and want to explore less-touristy routes, you will need to supplement this book with your own research.

good for planning
By To Protect the Innocent
I bought this book to help with planning our trek. It gives you all the high-level information you need to figure out where and when to go, what to bring and your basic route. Then, when we decided on the Everest region, we bought the book from Trailblazer on the Everest region, which is far more detailed. The Lonely Planet guide was left in storage at the guest house in Kathmandu, and we brought the Trailblazer guide with us on the trail.
The trailblazer guides are hard to find. Amazon doesn't even sell the latest edition, and it's available for $45 and up! you can buy it directly for 13 british pounds from the publisher with free delivery worldwide.
As for maps, we found it impossible to get a good map on Amazon, but there are locally-produced maps available when you get to Kathmandu. Those local maps are aimed at trekkers, and although not entirely accurate, are exactly what you need. The quality of publication is poor, and they will tear and the ink will wear through, so buy three. More recently, we found two maps published by National Geographic (Everest and Anapurna) which are plastic-coated, very durable, highly accurate, but only lack detailed local information that you get from the locally-produced maps.

The book is good, with lots of interesting tidbits. Because of the title "himalaya", I thought it would be focused solely on Himalaya. But there is a lot of material on the southern regions of Nepal as well
