One of the best books I've read in years

This book kept me in suspense from the very first paragraph. The main character, Quirk, is a pathologist who begins to look into some unusual circumstances involving the death of a young woman, Christine Falls, and finds himself caught up in a family drama that is at once believable and
bizarre. I haven't read a book in a long time that was written as beautifully as this one or where every word struck me as being just right. SOme of the descriptions were so vivid and poetic I found myself reading them out loud.
The character development is amazing. You might be introduced to some characters only briefly, but they never seem contrived or one-dimensional. The main character, Quirk, is a lost soul who doesn't believe he's a good man;but who eventually finds a moral path amongst a crowd of people who are either weak, self-deluded, or just plain cruel.
The book's central mystery is interesting and keeps one in suspense to the very end of the book; but the book is by no means just a mystery, unless you are talking about the mystery of human motivation, which is explored at great length. Perhaps the greatest mystery in my mind is why Quirk married Delia instead of Sarah, whom he obviously loved.
